Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and film actress who is known for her role as the fiery lawyer Teri Joseph in the Showtime series Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name following her marriage. Growing up living in Baltimore, Maryland, she was always intrigued by acting. In a Maryland high school contest during her first years of education she received the award for the best actress. She received her degree in acting from the New York University after working for 'The Washington Ballet Company', as well as performing in the theatre. The first role she played on screen in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love was a success and earned an immense amount of appreciation. The film was followed by films such as 'Boogie Nights Spark as well as Blue Streak. The film was highly praised for her role in Soul Food. In addition, she has appeared on TV programs like Second Time Around" and Empire. The stage was the place she appeared for a number of shows early on in her career. Contractor, who was born in Mumbai and resided in Nigeria during seven years, was awash with adventures and cultural encounters from an early age. From the age of seven until nine, Contractor was a student at boarding schools in London. The family later relocated to Toronto and she resided there throughout her early years. Contractor was a student and a dancer of classical style in Toronto. She was a student at an Etobicoke School of the Arts which is a highly specialized public arts high school where she did not only dance but also studied theatre. Contractor took the decision to study acting more seriously at the age of 16 following almost 10 years of dancing. When she completed her high school education, she was awarded a full Scholarship to University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed the Master of Arts in Theatre. She was also a double major in Psychology and Sociology. Following a semester at the University, Contractor went to an open audition for the show Pericles at the world-class, world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and landed the leading role. Her work was highly acclaimed in the 92 plays she appeared in. She was awarded the award in 2002 for the Best Production of the Year, as judged by Canadian Critics. Contractor accepted the invitation to join Stratford's Conservatory. Only eight men selected and four females are admitted to a course of 20 weeks in classical theater. Contractor was offered a place for the next season, and was offered the part as Hermia.
